Have you heard of emotional intelligence (EQ)? It’s the ability to identify, assess, and regulate the emotions of oneself, others, and groups. And studies show it’s critical, with it being a stronger indicator of success than IQ.
5 Components of Emotional Intelligence
Here are the five components of emotional intelligence:
💕 Empathy
Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.
🤝 Effective Social Skills
Interacting and relating to others positively and constructively.
🧠 Self-Awareness
Recognizing and understanding our own emotions and thoughts.
🧘♀️ Self-Regulation
Managing and controlling our emotions, impulses, and behaviors.
💪 Motivation
Harnessing emotions to achieve goals and maintain drive and purpose.
Self-mastery, the path to professional growth, is built on a foundation of self-awareness and self-regulation—integral components of emotional intelligence. Together they empower us to navigate challenges, develop healthier relationships, and achieve personal fulfillment.
Building Self-Awareness
We can build self-awareness by engaging in introspection—actively observing + reflecting on our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to gain deeper insight into ourselves.
Cultivating Self-Regulation
To cultivate self-regulation, practice calming techniques such as deep breathing and mindfulness exercises + find healthy outlets for stress and emotions. Set clear boundaries and work to consciously choose your responses instead of reacting impulsively.
